At the end of the movie The Cable Guy the creepy Jim Carrey causes an entire city to lose their cable television, freeing them from the grip of the boob-tube and allowing them to “wake up” and pursue other interests. It was a hilarious montage of people picking up books and suddenly paying attention to their family again.
Such is the situation I find myself in now.
Now that there is no new TV, I’m playing WoW again. I’m leveling my hunter from 60 to 70. I’m reading more too. I just finished the book Amsterdam by Ian McEwan based on a friend’s recommendation. After seeing I am Legend with my brother I listened to the original novel on audiobook.
I miss the shows that I love and when they come back, I’ll still catch The Office, Houseand Boston legal. However, I think this strike has helped me kick a bit of my TV habit. I doubt I’ll watch as much as I did before the strike. I wonder if that’s unique to me?
I follow Rich Stevens on twitter and the other day he posted something that made me chuckle:
As someone who writes, draws, makes a website, answers customers and helps pack merch … I don’t have much sympathy for striking writers. Want real royalties and freedom? LEAVE the studio system!
Food for thought.
