The latest story-arc about monster hunters has a pretty geeky origin. I’ve been watching a lot of Torchwood. For those of you who don’t know, Torchwood is a spin-off of the revamped BBC series Doctor Who, which my family has become desperately addicted too. Torchwood is actually an anagram of Doctor Who (I always thought that was pretty cool).

My wife called me today to tell me that David Tennant officially announced he’s leaving Doctor Who. They’re doing five specials in 2009 and then in 2010 we get a new Doctor. For those of you interested you can read about it here.

I have to say that I’m sad, but totally okay with this. I love Tennant as the Doctor. He’s brilliant. Just a pleasure to watch. But I get that David is afraid that should he stick around too much longer, things will start to get stale and then all people will remember is when things took a downtick and not so much all the great episodes like “Blink” and “The Girl in the Fireplace.”

My family has only watched up to Series 3 of Doctor Who. In a couple weeks, Series 4 hits DVD and we get to watch the last season of David Tennant as the Doctor. It feels a lot like when I discovered Firefly after the fact and I knew after one episode that I better ration out the rest of these discs, cause it was all I was going to get.

If you are not watching the new Doctor Who series, I highly recommend it. You can get it on DVD (pretty expensive) or watch it on iTunes (cheaper). Let me warn you about going the iTunes route, however. Every year between series, they do a Christmas Special. Lots happens during these. They don’t put them on iTunes though. So when you jump from series to series via iTunes downloaded eps, you might be a tad confused.
