I wanted to point people to Webcomics.com today, specifically to an article my friend Kris Straub wrote about the retooling of his comic Starslip.
It’s very difficult for us as cartoonists to make changes to our work, even when we are excited about those changes. We’re terrified of alienating the readers who have become accustomed to the work as it is, but we’re even MORE terrified to stagnate.
Myself, I’m using a dream-sequence with Doctor Who to test out shading my strip. And I’m sitting on a redesign of Brent’s chin, where he actually has a chin, for fear that people will really hate it. I’m afraid to changing a portion of my characters face. Kris just turned his entire strip upside down.
This makes him very brave.
If you never read Starslip you need to check it out. Now’s a good time. If you stopped reading it, you need to check it out again.
