No game has ever been more ripe for role-playing than Star Trek Online. I’ve played a lot of MMOs, starting back with Ultima Online, moving to Everquest and then WoW. I even tried out Anarchy Online, City of Heroes and Star Wars Galaxies. Never once, did I have a desire to actively role-play inside these manufactured worlds.

But when I log into Star Trek Online, I want to be in Star Trek. And running into Captain Crunch on the U.S.S. Bowlomilk pisses me off. It takes me out of it. It really is the one thing that sucks about the game.

I was playing with Straub during the beta and we entered a system and an encounter started. The red alert klaxons went off and Kris said “Shields up!”

Now, shields are always up in Star Trek online. You can divert power from one side to another, and they can certainly be weakened, but you never have to remember to put them up. They’re always up. But you know what? Kris knows that when you enter an encounter in Star Trek, you fucking say “Shields up!”

I just wish everyone playing remembered that.

I just wanted to wish Image Comics a very happy belated 20th birthday.

Thank you so much for believing in PvP and supporting the strip and leading me to so many personal and professional achievements. I’ve made so many friends and marked so many items off my bucket list because of Image.

Every single Image comics founder, even those who have moved on from Image, have always taken the time to say a nice word to me at cons and be supportive and kind.

Image comics remains the best place for independent comic book creators to break into the industry. I will always be grateful.

Happy Birthday, guys!
