I got an email today commenting on how my art recently has had a very Gabe-like feeling to it. I can dig it.
It’s obvious to me that working in the same space as Mike is affecting my style. I steal from him, he steals from me. We’ve never minded. It’s only natural among artists who mutually admire each others work.
The Belgian artist Herge developed a style of cartooning that was later called Ligne claire or “The Clean Line.” You can see it in his most famous creation, Tintin. The style was adopted by “The Brussels School” of artists who all worked on Tintin Magazine. And post WW2, the “Marcinelle school” was a studio of Belgian cartoonists formed by Joseph Gillain who all worked on the Spirou Magazine and they all adopted a similar style.
So I think that Mike and I should just work ever closer to merging our styles and form our own school. What should we call it? The “Pacific Northwest?” “The Seattle School?” “The Time Magazine School?” No wait. I’ve never been in Time magazine. We can’t use that one.
Suggestions?
